DYNAMO ACTION IN LINEAR SHEAR FLOWS |
Large-scale cosmic magnetic fields are believed to originate from dynamo action in the electrically conducting fluids. The framework of mean-field electro-hydrodynamics, which has been developed/evolved by using Maxwell's equations together with Ohm's law during the past few decades, aims to address some of the outstanding puzzles related to magnetic fields in the universe. One particular challenge is to explain the generation of magnetic fields over length scales exceeding the length scale of turbulence. In this talk, the speaker will try to discuss the related issues by asking : under what conditions does the equation for mean (ordered) magnetic field admit growing solutions due to non-helical turbulence in a background linear shear flow? |
