  SEMINAR

PROFESSOR STEVEN KAHN

Director, LSST & Stanford University, USA

THE LARGE SYNOPTIC SURVEY TELESCOPE

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will be a large aperture, wide-field, ground-based telescope designed to survey the entire southern sky in six optical colors every few nights. As such, it will enable a diverse array of scientific investigations ranging from studies of small moving objects in the solar system to the structure and evolution of the universe as a whole. LSST will formally begin construction this summer, leading to the beginning of the ten year survey in 2022. The speaker will describe the essentials of the telescope design and highlight some of the science opportunities presented by this world-unique facility in a variety of scientific fields.
