The Ly$\alpha$ emission in Damped Ly$\alpha$ Absorbers

The significance of the Ly$\alpha$ emission line as a probe of the high-redshift Universe has long been established. Originating mainly in the vicinity of young, massive stars, it is ideal for detecting young galaxies, the fundamental building blocks of our Universe. Here, the speaker will talk about the detection of such emission from the damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) systems which are thought to trace gas bearing galaxies, containing most of the neutral hydrogen atoms at all redshifts.
