Radio Giants in the Universe

When powerful AGNs at the centres of galaxies emit radio jets, the galaxies are called Radio galaxies. When these galaxies achieve megaparsec scales, they get referred to as Giant radio galaxies (GRGs). Galaxy clusters are the closest match when it comes to comparing the extent of radio lobes of these galaxies. Since the inception of Radio Astronomy about six decades ago, millions of radio galaxies have been discovered but only about 150-200 of them can be categorised as GRGs. The giant sizes and rarity of these objects still remains a mystery. The energy content in magnetic fields and relativistic particles in the GRGs are collectively the largest seen in a single galaxy associated astrophysical system. The shocks within the energetic jets and radio lobes of GRGs can be the possible sites for acceleration of ultra high energy cosmic rays whose confirmed origin is still unknown. The speaker will talk about discovering nearly 50 new GRGs from the NVSS and their interesting results from multiwavelength studies.
