THE PHYSICS OF GLACIER DYNAMICS

The speaker will first introduce the basic physics of glacier dynamics, its relation to the climate, the kind of questions that are addressed and the kind of data that is available. Then he will review the different levels of modelling glacier dynamics. Many Himalyan glaciers have a thick debris cover in the lower reaches. He will discuss how this affects and enriches the dynamics. He will finally describe some of their work on modelling and field studies of the Satopanth Glacier, Garhwal Himalaya.
