The impact of rotation on large-scale convection in the solar interior

Convection is believed to play a central role in determining the large-scale dynamics of the Sun. Measuring its properties is therefore a problem of fundamental importance. Convection couples global modes of oscillation and measuring this subtle effect allows for inferring the details of the underlying flows. The speaker will present preliminary analyses from 20 years of solar oscillation data (MDI and HMI) that reveal asymmetries in convective flows, in apparent agreement with long anticipated theoretical arguments.
