The speaker shall discuss Heisenberg's idea of the scattering matrix (S-matrix) in a historical perspective. The subsequent developments in construction of S-matrix in the frame work of generalized field theory will be briefly introduced. The power of the formalism which is based on fundamental principles like locality, Lorentz invariance and unitarity of S-matrix will be discussed. Finally, the connection with high energy collision of hadrons and growth properties of cross sections will be illustrated.
