Tackling galaxy formation and evolution using simulations and observations

Cosmological simulations give us a front-row view into the full evolutionary history of a galaxy, an impossible feat in observational astronomy. The speaker combines optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of galaxies with state-of-the-art cosmological simulations to study the galaxy formation and evolution. In this talk, she will be presenting her work on how environment and redshift affect the chemical and kinematic evolution of galaxies. She finds a significant contribution of pre-enriched gas accretion towards the chemical enrichment of galaxies in a high-density environment. She will also briefly mention her recent work linking the star-formation histories of massive galaxies to their sizes and environment.
