Gamma ray burst: A Cosmic Mystery

Gamma ray bursts are extremely energetic transients observed in the universe. They are produced by either the collapse of massive stars or the merger of compact objects like neutron stars or black holes. Ever since its discovery in 1973, they have been extensively observed and studied by both space as well as ground based observatories. Currently, gamma ray burst is the only astrophysical event successfully observed in different messengers such as gravity and electromagnetic waves. Nearly half a century since it's discovery, the phenomenon still remains elusive in terms of it's progenitor, jet composition and radiation process. In my talk, I will review the observational breakthroughs and the current theoretical understanding of these mysterious objects. I will also present the key outstanding problems in the GRB prompt emission and will also discuss the recent advancements made in the direction to resolve these enigma.
