Constraining dense matter physics using f-mode oscillations in Neutron Stars

Gravitational waves are emerging as an important tool to probe the interior of neutron stars and therefore the behaviour of dense matter under extreme conditions. Unstable oscillation modes in neutron stars such as fundamental or f-modes are expected to emit gravitational waves abundantly. In this undergraduate project, f-mode oscillations in neutron stars are used to constrain the nature of dense matter by a systematic investigation of the nuclear parameters determined by nuclear experiments. Correlations of the mode frequencies with multi-messenger astrophysical observables are also investigated, which are relevant for asteroseismology. Future detection of f-modes from gravitational waves could then provide a unique way of constraining nuclear empirical parameters and therefore the behaviour of dense nuclear matter.
