Morphology and topology of random fields: Application to compressible turbulence

Most of the theory of random functions and the associated methods for data analysis rely on Gaussian statistics. However, the need to analyse non-Gaussian random fields is growing together with the sophistication of theory and observations in many areas, as diverse as the large-scale structure formation and turbulence. This talk presents a review of some approaches to random fields that do not rely on their Gaussian statistical properties, in particular integral geometry and computational topology and their application to intermittent random magnetic fields in the observations and simulations of the strongly compressible interstellar medium.
