MODELING AND SIMULATION FOR ADAPTIVE OPTICS SYSTEMS

Using the principles of Fourier optics and scalar diffraction theory it is possible to model the propagation of wavefronts accurately. This, combined with the computational treatment of propagation in atmospheric turbulence, makes it possible to develop simulation models for optical systems in general and adaptive optics systems in particular. This talk will discuss the practical aspects of putting together models for atmospheric propagation and for optical systems, for the purpose of analyzing and evaluating the performance of adaptive optical systems. Models of atmospheric turbulence as well as optical components for wavefront control will be addressed. The building of end-to-end simulations and evaluating the performance of such optical systems models will be discussed.
