I just yesterday heard the sad news about Professor Padmanabhan — whose work on gravitational energy inspired some of the research in our Cambridge group prior to my joining, and whom I had hoped some day to meet — from a colleague, and wanted to offer my condolences to those I met at interview and others at IUCAA.

Paddy was our gracious host across several visits to India spanning 30 years. He welcomed us into his scientific world, just as he and Vasanthi welcomed us into their home; our lives and careers are richer as a result. We already miss him.

It is very difficult to believe the devastating truth about Paddy's sudden and untimely demise. I knew him since since 1995-96 and it was a privilege learning, discussing and interacting with him.
He will always be fondly remembered as someone who lived and worked in India on topics that he believed to be important and enjoyed working on. His immense output in terms of books, papers on physics, articles on science, history, mathematics.... remains with us and will keep him alive among future generations too, in the years to come.
