The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is revolutionizing the era of time-domain astronomy with the starting of the deepest, widest, and fastest Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Rubin-LSST is generating an unprecedented volume of real-time alerts each night for transient and variable candidates, which opens an enormous space for new astronomical discoveries. To prepare the time-domain astronomy community for the effective scientific use and follow-ups of Rubin-LSST public alert streams and community brokers, this workshop is being organized with the support through the LINCC Frameworks Community Event program at LSST Discovery Alliance and IUCAA.
The millions of nightly alerts from Rubin/LSST make community brokers essential systems for filtering, classifying, prioritizing, and interpreting astrophysical events in real time. To fully exploit the Rubin data, researchers must understand the practical workflows for generating and distributing follow-up by quickly analysing alerts. This hands-on workshop will therefore introduce participants to the era of Rubin-LSST, learn the motivation, architecture, and scientific use cases behind some of the Rubin-LSST alert brokers, along with the data-processing pipelines that underpin them. In addition to the introductory lectures by experts from major broker teams, the participants will gain direct experience with broker data access, alert filtering, and exploratory analysis. Participants will also be given a platform to showcase their ideas through posters on projects related to Transient and Variable star science, and perform new collaborative work leading to a publication during and after the workshop. This is crucial for capacity building to fully exploit the unprecedented Rubin-LSST data for new discoveries in time domain astronomy.
Registration Process: There is no registration fee for this workshop but the interested participants are required to fill out a registration form. All the participants will be provided with food and accommodation at the IUCAA campus unless opted out. There is also a possibility of limited travel support to the participants.
The Scientific Organizing Committee will shortlist the participants based on the details in the registration form. The workshop will primarily cover public alert brokers and is open to all. It is not limited to Rubin-LSST data right holders, and researchers interested in transient and variable star science are strongly encouraged to apply.
